Unfortunately, I have to start with a statement which is necessary to make after it became apparent that the Concert Artist label had released over a hundred CDs with plagiarized recordings spread as the work of pianist Joyce Hatto. I was hoping that nothing of this had been done to the Concert Artist Fiorentino series. Yet it is clear now that -- at this state of investigation -- some recordings issued under Fiorentino's name are not the work of the pianist. I have decided to let the Concert Artist releases in the discography, adding the name of the pianist whose work was plagiarized (when definite information has become available) or adding just a 'note of doubt'. The reviews of such CDs will also be left in.
Thus, every Concert Artist CD which was issued after the pianist's death in 1998 has now to be considered as possibly presenting either original recordings or doctored original material, doctored fragments of original material or downright plagiarized material played actually by other pianists. At the moment the only absolutely authentic recordings of Fiorentino released in the Concert Artist Fiorentino series are the Gershwin Concerto in F and the Three Preludes. It is important to add that all British (Barrington-Coupe) recordings released in their original LP format and later on tape cassettes and the re-releases of APR in their "Early Recordings" series are NOT affected.

Preface

The Italian pianist Sergio Fiorentino was born in Naples on December 22, 1927. His exceptional talent showed at an early age. Being granted a scholarship by the Ministery of Education in 1938, he studied at the Conservatorio "San Pietro a Majella" under Luigi Finizio and Paolo Denza, earning his diploma in 1946. In 1948 he attended a master class of Carlo Zecchi in Salzburg. By that time he had already begun his career as a solo and trio player in his native country, and had won several national and international piano competitions.
Hailed by critics for his unusual technical and musical endowments, his concert career grew steadily and took him to nearly all countries in Western Europe. His debut in New York's Carnegie Recital Hall took place in October, 1953, a South American tour in 1954 led him to Argentina and Uruguay. He was under contract with concert agencies such as Adler, Gérard and de Valmalète. However, a near fatal plane accident at the end of his South American tour resulted in a severe cut-back of his activities. He took on a post as a teacher at his old conservatory in Naples. Even though he overcame his physical handicap after awhile, the demands of his position in Naples and his absence from the international concert stages caused him to lose his agents.
A new start was made in the late fifties in England. He played frequently in Wigmore Hall and Royal Festival Hall in London and in other cities in Britain. The London Philharmonic, London Symphony and Philharmonia Orchestras accompanied him in performances of works by Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, de Falla and Gershwin. Most of his recordings were made during those years.
Various circumstances, among these a growing unease with the strenuous life of being an itinerant musician and teacher simultaneously, prompted him to withdraw again from an extensive concert life. He limited his rare appearances in public to his native country and started to give regular master classes, working also occasionally for Italian radio RAI.
When he resigned from the conservatory in 1993 he once again took an interest in playing in public to a greater extent. One year earlier an invitation to Germany to play four recitals turned out to be a great success and resulted in annual appearances in that country. The esteem of his artistry was such that he became once again a highly sought-for pianist. He travelled to America in 1996, 1997 and 1998 to give concerts at the prestigious Newport Music Festival, in New York City (Alice Tully Hall) and in Boston and Providence. He went to France (Angoulême) and Taiwan (Taipeh) and received invitations again to France (Montpellier), to Russia (Novosibirsk and Krasnoyarsk), the Netherlands (Utrecht) and Canada (Ottawa). Since 1994 he had also embarked upon a major recording project in Berlin,, being able to confide his unique art to no less than 10 CD's released on a regular basis exclusively by the British label APR. The "Indian summer" of his on-an-off-career, alas, was cut-off by his sudden death in Naples on August 22, 1998, depriving the musical world of a master of rare stature worth being mentioned only in context with the greatest names in his profession. Luckily, however, and due to the tireless work of Concert Artist/Fidelio Recordings, a substantial part of his recorded repertoire which never saw publication, is now prepared for release by both Concert Artist/Fidelio and APR. All these recordings were made in England during the fifties and sixties and are to be considered as a major extension of his already large recorded repertoire.

Nota bene:

Some sleeves of earlier SAGA issues contain the legend that Sergio Fiorentino "...has recently recorded the 24 Preludes and the Etudes tableaux for SAGA RECORDS as well as the 4 Piano Concertos and the Paganini Rhapsody by Rachmaninoff".     Finally I have to add a few words concerning a very special kind of "pseudonymous issue" of two works played by Sergio Fiorentino. But first some facts about the SAGA label: SAGA was a small but enterprising company in the late fifties. SAGA eventually passed into liquidation and the repertoire was acquired by ALLIED RECORDS / ASSOCIATED PERFORMANCES / ART & SOUND. The new owners continued to reissue periodically the original SAGA performances, retaining the old catalogue numbers or also using new ones. In 1973 a release of some performances was prepared which the eminent Russian-English pianist Leff Pouishnoff had made for SAGA way back in the late fifties. A Chopin/Liszt programme from these sessions was released on SAGA XID 5013 and a different programme incorporating the Theme & Variations op.72 by Glazounov (which appeared earlier on an EP) was scheduled for the reissue in question, labelled "The Art of Pouishnoff" and published on SAGA 5375. Strangely enough this record from 1973 exists in two versions with the same pieces in the same order on both sides (side A: Chopin Polonaise Fantaisie op.61 / Liszt Mephisto Waltz #1 // side B: Chopin Rondo op.16 / Glazounov Theme and Variations op.72). But whereas the original Pouishnoff performances are to be found on the version with the black label and the matrix numbers 5375+A/5375+B, the second version of this record has on side A strikingly different interpretations of both Chopin's Polonaise Fantaisie and Liszt's Mephisto Waltz #1 which are not played by Leff Pouishnoff but by Sergio Fiorentino. This record has a black label and the matrix numbers 5375A-3/5375B-3 or a blue label and the matrix numbers 5375A-3 and 5375B-4. The recordings of both these works by Chopin and Liszt have been identified as formerly unissued performances from Sergio Fiorentino's sessions for the SAGA label. How and why this mistake happened is of minor interest. What counts is that two more exciting interpretations of Sergio Fiorentino have been made available to the admirers of his art as a consequence which otherwise would have remained forgotten.

(For reasons of economy I have listed the Polonaise Fantaisie op. 61 on both SAGA STM 6021 and SAGA 5375 as if they were issues of the same tape or takes. It has to be observed, however, that despite a general identity of the whole interpretation small differences can be detected in various places.)

A different kind of "surprise record" is PHOENIX X 9050, offering both Liszt concertos. According to the label the 1st concerto is played by Sergio Fiorentino and the Hamburg Pro Musica Orchestra under Erich Riede. This would be quite in order were it not for the grooves to tell the listener a different story: without doubt we can hear the 1950 performance of the piece with Emil Gilels under Kondrashin's baton! The matrix number of this record is FDY 2031A/B so it is almost certain that the record FIDELITY FDY 2031 also has the Gilels version on side A. The reverse side of the PHOENIX record with Liszt's 2nd concerto, played by "Laszlo Zemlitz" and the "Carinthian Philharmonic Orchestra" under "Franz Meisdorf" is in fact the performance by Julius Katchen and the London, Philharmonic Orchestra under Ataulfo Argenta! This identification applies also for the reverse side of Classics Club X 1011. An interesting case is A.R.C. FDY 2021 from 1963, a record which exists again in two versions, one naming Sergio Fiorentino and the Hamburg Pro Musica under George Hurst, the other one "Paul Procopolis" and the "Leipzig Pro Arte Orchestra" under "Gorg Ramifski". The sleeves are differently designed, the matrix numbers are the same. Both versions, however, contain a performance of Tchaikovsky's 1st piano concerto, played by Sondra Bianca, pno., and the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra conducted by Hans Jürgen Walther.
